More use from your rooftop solar
Is a Sungrow battery right for your Adelaide home?
A home battery can store surplus solar generation for evening and overnight use. Its value depends on how much energy you have available to charge it, how much electricity you use later and the difference between your import and export tariffs.
Start with your electricity data rather than selecting the biggest battery. A household with substantial evening demand may benefit from more storage, while a home with limited surplus solar may need a smaller configuration or a review of its solar capacity first.
At Australian Design Solar, we assess storage alongside your inverter, household loads and plans for future appliances. Our Sungrow solar battery guide provides further background on the brand’s home storage options.

How much does a Sungrow battery cost in Adelaide?
Our published Adelaide guide lists 9.6kWh Sungrow SBR installation from $7,999*. This is a starting point for an enquiry, not a fixed price for every property. Request a current itemised quote before comparing packages or making a purchase decision.
Installed cost includes more than the battery modules. The proposed inverter, control equipment, installation work and backup arrangement can materially change the total.
Battery configuration
The series and number of modules determine storage capacity and contribute to equipment cost. Compare the precise model and capacity, rather than a rounded “10kWh” or “20kWh” description.
Inverter integration
A suitable existing hybrid inverter may simplify the project. Other homes require inverter replacement or a different system design. Compatibility must be confirmed before pricing is finalised.
Site and backup work
Switchboard condition, cable distance, battery location and essential-load circuits affect installation scope. Ask for upgrades and optional backup components to be identified clearly.
Ask whether GST, inverter equipment, metering, commissioning and backup work are included. Any incentive should be shown separately with its eligibility assumptions so the same discount is not counted twice.
Sungrow SBR or SBH: what is the difference?
SBR and SBH are separate high-voltage lithium iron phosphate battery ranges. They use different module sizes and must be paired with compatible equipment. Do not assume the two ranges have interchangeable modules or identical installation requirements.
| Comparison | Sungrow SBR | Sungrow SBH |
|---|---|---|
| Chemistry | Lithium iron phosphate (LFP). | Lithium iron phosphate (LFP). |
| Module energy | 3.2kWh per battery module. | 5kWh per battery module. |
| Published Australian range | 6.4–25.6kWh per unit, with 2–8 modules. | Australian product page lists SBH150, 200, 250, 300, 350 and 400 configurations. |
| Selection priority | Match the supported configuration to measured storage needs and the compatible inverter. | Assess the required storage and power capability as a complete inverter-and-battery system. |
| Future expansion | Subject to manufacturer requirements and the existing configuration. | Subject to manufacturer requirements and the existing configuration. |
Manufacturer range information reviewed 11 September 2026. Local availability, approved configurations and inverter compatibility must be confirmed for the quoted installation.
Battery capacity and output power are different specifications. The battery and inverter combination determines how much power can be delivered at once; adding storage does not automatically mean every appliance can run simultaneously.
Which Sungrow battery size should you choose?
Use evening and overnight grid imports as a starting point, then compare them with surplus solar, seasonal production and any backup reserve. A battery that is regularly undercharged or underused may offer less value than a smaller, well-matched system.
Lower storage requirements
Assess smaller supported SBR configurations where available surplus generation or after-dark demand is modest. The right size depends on measured use, not simply the number of people at home.
Moderate evening demand
Compare configurations such as SBR 9.6kWh, 12.8kWh or 16kWh if your data supports them. Ask how much capacity remains available after the chosen backup reserve.
Higher energy needs
Consider larger supported SBR or SBH configurations when substantial measured demand justifies them. Check that your solar or planned charging arrangement can make practical use of the extra capacity.
A 16kWh battery describes energy capacity. It does not mean the battery can supply 16kW of appliances at once. Ask for usable energy and continuous system output in your quote.
Planning for an electric vehicle
Include the vehicle’s likely charging schedule in the assessment. Daytime solar charging creates a different requirement from overnight charging through a home battery. An EV does not automatically justify a larger battery without checking the energy balance.

Can you add Sungrow storage to existing solar?
It may be possible, but the existing inverter needs a model-specific assessment. Having solar panels already installed does not guarantee that a Sungrow high-voltage battery can connect directly to the current inverter.
- Existing compatible hybrid inverter: confirm the exact battery model, firmware and supported configuration.
- Existing conventional solar inverter: assess whether inverter replacement or another approved design is appropriate.
- Older solar installation: review its condition and electrical requirements before committing to a battery retrofit.
For new solar and battery installations, assess the components together. Explore our 6.6kW, 10kW and 13kW solar system guides as starting points for a tailored design.
Will a Sungrow battery keep your home running in a blackout?
Backup depends on the installed system, not the battery brand alone. You need a compatible inverter, appropriate switching and a design that identifies which circuits receive backup power.
Start by listing essential loads such as refrigeration, lighting, internet equipment and selected power points. Air conditioning, ovens and EV charging can require much higher power and need specific assessment.
Single-phase and three-phase homes
Confirm the property’s electrical supply and the proposed inverter arrangement. For a three-phase installation, ask which phases and circuits are backed up and what limits apply to simultaneous loads.
Runtime and solar recharging
Runtime changes with battery charge, reserve settings, appliance demand and losses. Ask whether solar can recharge the battery during an outage and what conditions are required for that function.
A clear backup scope is more useful than a general promise of “whole-home protection”. Your quote should identify the equipment and circuits included.
Battery incentives and South Australian requirements
Information reviewed: 11 September 2026. Confirm eligibility and requirements for the installation date.
Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program
Eligible installations may receive a discount through the Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program. Changes began on 1 May 2026, so older calculations may not apply. Ask for the current incentive calculation and the payable price in writing.
Eligibility depends on approved equipment, installation requirements and the property’s circumstances. A fixed discount percentage should not be assumed for every battery package.
The former SA Home Battery Scheme is closed
South Australia’s former Home Battery Scheme is closed. It should not be advertised as an available subsidy for a new Sungrow installation. Federal support and any retailer or VPP offer need to be assessed separately.
Connection and export arrangements
South Australia has dynamic export compliance requirements for new solar inverter installations. The applicable connection, equipment and commissioning requirements must be assessed when a battery project adds or replaces an inverter.
Confirm your connection conditions with the proposed design. Export capacity is not the same as battery storage capacity, and the retailer’s feed-in tariff is a separate commercial term.
Virtual power plant offers
Before accepting a VPP offer, confirm support for the exact Sungrow model and inverter. Compare battery control permissions, reserve settings, payment terms and exit conditions. VPP suitability should be checked against your own savings and backup priorities.
How to compare savings and long-term value
A battery can reduce grid purchases by shifting available energy into later hours. The value depends on avoided electricity costs, the solar export payments you give up, system losses and how regularly the battery operates.
Request an estimate based on your electricity bill and interval data where available. The assumptions should show import tariffs, export value, expected battery use and seasonal charging potential. There is no single payback period that applies to every Adelaide home.
Warranty and support
Ask for the current Australian warranty documents for both the battery and inverter. Check the coverage period, capacity-retention conditions, operating limits and claim process. Product warranty, inverter warranty and installation workmanship cover are separate items.
Keep your commissioning records, serial numbers and support contact. Ask how to use monitoring to spot unusual performance and how to request help if an alert appears.
Comparing other battery brands
If you are comparing alternatives, review our Alpha ESS battery guide, SAJ battery price guide and Fox ESS battery price guide. Compare matching usable capacity, output power, backup scope and installed cost rather than brand-level claims.
Your Adelaide battery installation assessment

Sungrow solar battery Adelaide FAQs
What is the starting price for a Sungrow battery in Adelaide?
Our published guide lists 9.6kWh SBR installation from $7,999*, subject to current quote confirmation and the conditions above. Final pricing depends on equipment, site work, backup and any applicable incentives.
Is a 9.6kWh Sungrow battery the same as a 10kWh battery?
No. A 9.6kWh SBR configuration has a different stated capacity from a 10kWh battery. Compare exact model specifications rather than rounded package descriptions, and confirm usable energy and reserve settings.
Should I choose SBR or SBH?
Choose based on supported inverter combinations, required storage, output power and installed cost. SBR uses 3.2kWh modules and SBH uses 5kWh modules, but module size alone does not determine which range suits your home.
Can I expand a Sungrow battery later?
Expansion may be possible within manufacturer requirements. Confirm compatibility, configuration limits, installation work and warranty conditions before relying on future expansion. SBR and SBH modules should not be treated as interchangeable.
Will it work with my existing solar inverter?
The exact inverter and battery models must be checked. A conventional solar inverter cannot be assumed to accept a high-voltage battery directly. A retrofit may require a compatible inverter or another approved design.
Does the battery automatically provide blackout backup?
No. Backup depends on the inverter, switching equipment and circuit design. Confirm which circuits will run, the output limits and whether solar charging is available during an outage.
Can I claim the old South Australian Home Battery Scheme subsidy?
No. The former SA Home Battery Scheme is closed. Ask about eligibility under current federal support and separately assess any compatible retailer or VPP offers.
Will a Sungrow battery eliminate my electricity bill?
It may reduce grid energy purchases, but a zero bill is not guaranteed. Supply charges, low solar generation, reserve settings, household demand and retailer terms can still affect what you pay.
How do I request an Adelaide installation quote?
Complete the form above with your details. Have your postcode, electricity bill and existing inverter model ready, along with any specific backup requirements.
